As part of my residency with REDBASE Foundation, I ran a sound workshop for primary school aged children in the neighbouring area: Arsip Sinestesia, Yogyakarta [Synesthesia Archive, Yogyakarta]. Responding to grobak mobile food carts who each have their own distinct sounds – bells for satay, metal spoon on a ceramic bowl for bakso and es buah, wood block for siomay (and many more) – participants created new sounds for foods they like to eat, using everyday objects and thinking about timbre, pitch, rhythm and repetition. We recorded these new sounds to create an archive of fictitious food cart noises.
(This is an ongoing project.)
