Imaginative Histories, 2015

Ida Lawrence, Inventory 2014, acrylic, pencil and nails on board, 120 cm x 180 cm

As part of my residency with Leichhardt Council, I ran a sculpture and storytelling workshop for 8-12 year olds where young ‘artist-archeologists’ were invited to join an ‘archeological dig’ of Leichhardt Town Hall. The day began with a semi-fictional tour of the Town Hall and Council Chambers, where participants were presented with ‘facts’ (true and not so true) about the site’s history and current use. Participants were encouraged to analyse the building’s objects and architecture and to wildly imagine the reasons behind the building’s design and collection of objects. Later, participants ‘discovered’ (ie. created) imaginative sculptural ‘artefacts’, revealing their curious functions and histories through storytelling and their place of ‘discovery’ through photo-documentation.
